In a move to expand access to mental health support, 18 provincial-level regions across China, including prominent cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Zhejiang, have initiated the 12356 mental health assistance hotline. This service aims to offer quicker and more accessible mental health support in response to growing demand, according to a Chinese health official.
At a press conference, National Health Commission spokesperson Hu Qiangqiang highlighted that additional provinces are developing similar initiatives to ensure a comprehensive nationwide coverage of mental health services. He explained that the commission has designated the period from 2025 to 2027 as key years for enhancing pediatric and mental health services, with efforts including the promotion of mental health awareness among targeted groups and ensuring that every city-level region hosts at least one hospital with dedicated psychological and sleep disorder clinics.
Furthermore, over 5,000 lectures on mental health are planned to take place across the country during this period, underlining the government’s commitment to bolstering both public awareness and the overall quality of mental health care services throughout China.
