Beijing and Bangkok Join Forces to Combat Air Pollution
In a significant step towards cleaner air, Beijing and Bangkok, the capitals of China and Thailand respectively, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on air quality monitoring and management. This agreement, signed virtually against the backdrop of the 50th anniversary of China-Thailand diplomatic relations, marks a commitment to sharing best practices and tackling the shared challenge of air pollution.
The MOU, valid for three years, outlines Beijing's commitment to sharing its expertise with Bangkok in battling air pollution, particularly in monitoring and reducing PM2.5 pollutants. These tiny airborne particles, measuring 2.5 microns or less in diameter, pose significant health risks. The agreement will facilitate mutual visits, training sessions, and support for Bangkok's pilot projects, leveraging Beijing's experience in improving its own air quality.
Beijing has made remarkable strides in recent years, significantly reducing air pollution through various clean-up initiatives. The average concentration of PM2.5 in Beijing reached 30.5 micrograms per cubic meter in 2024, meeting national standards for four consecutive years. Compared to 2013, the annual average concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide in Beijing have decreased by 65.9%, 50%, 57.1%, and 88.7%, respectively.
This collaboration between Beijing and Bangkok demonstrates a shared commitment to cleaner air and a healthier future for both cities. By sharing knowledge and expertise, they can work together to tackle the complex issue of air pollution and improve the well-being of their citizens.

Instead of focusing on monitoring, they should be focusing on reducing emissions at the source.
