The rising temperatures in Southwest China's Chongqing have ushered in a delightful transformation in the Bishan district, where the pioneering driverless monorail system, known as the Chongqing SkyShuttle, now runs through patches of blooming spring landscapes. Over the past few years, local authorities have introduced an impressive array of plant life—over 30 varieties including apricots, magnolias, and poppies—that now injects the area with seasonal color alongside the modern transit route.
Launched in April 2021, the SkyShuttle was developed by BYD, a top new energy vehicle manufacturer in China, with an investment exceeding 1.8 billion yuan over a span of seven years. This initiative features an electric-powered, autonomous rail system that stretches along a 15.4-kilometer elevated track, serving 15 stations, and is part of a broader strategy to address critical urban challenges. The project has been designed to improve cost-efficiency, reduce air pollution, and ease traffic congestion, aligning technological innovation with environmental and urban planning goals.
