Lebanon Establishes New Reform-Oriented Government

The Lebanese Presidency announced the formation of a new government comprising 24 members, with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam at its helm. In a press briefing held at the presidential palace, Salam stated that the government would be driven by reforms, viewing them as essential for steering the country towards a more stable future. He emphasized the need to implement the 1989 Taif Agreement, widely recognized for ending the civil war, as well as initiating significant financial and economic reforms and securing a judicial system that operates independently of political pressures.

During his remarks, Prime Minister Salam also highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing security and stability. By working towards the enforcement of relevant UN resolutions and facilitating steps toward Israel's withdrawal, the new cabinet intends to create a supportive framework for Lebanon's broader reconstruction efforts. The administration plans to work closely with the international community and address the concerns of younger citizens to rebuild trust both at home and abroad.

In recent key developments, former army chief Joseph Aoun was elected as Lebanon's 14th president, a move that ended a lengthy period of political deadlock. Shortly after this historic transition, Salam was appointed as prime minister with the responsibility of forming a government aimed at rejuvenating the nation's political and socio-economic landscape.

“While reforms will take time, it’s reassuring to see a government that is prepared to implement long-overdue changes.”

“While now is touted as a historic moment, the reality is that factional politics will only hinder any transformative changes.”

“Security, stability, and reforms sound nice, but there’s little substance in those statements. Empty rhetoric once again.”

“Another government claiming it will be ‘driven by reforms’ is a recipe for disappointment. We need accountability.”

“It’s encouraging to see the focus on both domestic reforms and improving international relations. A balanced approach at last.”

“I’m not convinced that electing a former army chief to lead isn’t a step backward in terms of democratic progress.”

“Focusing on economic and judicial reforms shows that they are aware of the real problems. Let’s give them a chance!”

“Finally, a government that talks about real reforms and a plan to strengthen both our economy and judiciary—good move!”
