In central China's Hubei Province, the white horse Bailong won admiration after helping save a man from drowning in the cold Hanjiang River. On February 4, 2025, Yelibay Dosunbek, a 39-year-old Uygur from Xinjiang, rode Bailong during a daring rescue in Xiantao city. Bailong, a 7-year-old mixed breed from Xinjiang, swam nearly 40 meters with Dosunbek clinging to its back to bring the man safely ashore, assisted by a local winter swimming enthusiast.
After the rescue, Bailong exhibited symptoms of distress including loss of appetite and diarrhea, prompting immediate veterinary care. Despite initial improvements that allowed the horse to appear at an honor bestowal ceremony in a red sash on February 6, Bailong's condition worsened due to a sudden severe intestinal obstruction, a complication known to carry a high risk for horses. Local veterinary experts confirmed that such intestinal emergencies, characterized by a twisting of the intestines, often lead to a high mortality rate.
The heroism of both Bailong and Dosunbek resonated deeply with the community and netizens across the country. Xiantao residents have paid tribute by laying flowers along the Hanjiang River and city officials have announced plans to erect a statue in the horse's honor. In addition, the name of an upcoming river-crossing event is set to change to the "Bailongma Cup" to commemorate the horse's legacy.
In recognition of Dosunbek's bravery, local figures and the Xinjiang chamber of commerce in Xiantao have pledged future support, including the donation of another white horse to continue Bailong’s legacy as a symbol of courage and ethnic unity. Reflecting on the events, Dosunbek stated that he would make the same choice again, reinforcing the sentiment that saving a life is a decision one would never regret.

“Connecting ethnic unity and a heroic animal rescue seems a bit forced. It almost feels like political messaging.”

“The focus on a 7-year-old horse’s ailment seems over-dramatic for what should be a commendable rescue effort.”

“The event now seems more like a marketing tool to push for further donations and publicity rather than honoring real bravery.”

“Why focus on the horse’s struggle to recover rather than addressing what could have been avoided better in the first place?”
