A Commitment to Multilateralism and Cooperation
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met with Austrian interim Chancellor and Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Munich, Germany, on February 15, 2025.
During their meeting, both leaders emphasized the importance of multilateralism and cooperation in addressing global challenges. Minister Wang expressed China's readiness to work with Austria in upholding multilateralism, maintaining the authority of the United Nations, and defending the international rule of law. He also condemned unilateral bullying and stressed the need for peaceful coexistence.
Minister Wang acknowledged the current global climate of overlapping security challenges, economic risks, and instability. He highlighted the international community's desire for peace and stability amidst growing concerns about division and confrontation. He commended the Munich Security Conference's focus on multipolarization, aligning with China's commitment to peaceful development and its positive role in a changing world.
Minister Wang acknowledged Austria's long-standing role as a bridge-builder and mediator in international affairs, particularly as a permanently neutral country. He encouraged Austria to seize the opportunities presented by China's development and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation. He expressed China's desire to advance China-Austria relations and continue leading China-EU relations.
With this year marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the EU, Minister Wang expressed China's willingness to work with EU countries, including Austria, to revitalize China-EU relations and drive progress in the next 50 years.
Minister Schallenberg reciprocated, emphasizing the mutual respect and close cooperation between Austria and China on bilateral and multilateral issues. He expressed Austria's commitment to strengthening dialogue and cooperation with China. He also stressed the importance of open cooperation and rejected decoupling and the severing of industrial and supply chains, emphasizing their detrimental impact on global development and prosperity.
Minister Schallenberg commended China's adherence to multilateralism and expressed Austria's willingness to work with China to uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and defend the post-World War II international order. He acknowledged China's influence as a major country and expressed hope that China would utilize its Eastern wisdom to play a significant role in promoting peace.
The two leaders also exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East and other issues of mutual concern.
