Chinese Warships Spotted Near Australia
Three Chinese warships were spotted 150 nautical miles from Sydney, Australia, prompting the Australian Defense Force to monitor their movements closely. While Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles described the activity as "unusual," he emphasized that the ships were not a threat as they were operating in accordance with international law.
Some Australian media and analysts, however, expressed concerns about the presence of the Chinese vessels. Professor Rory Medcalf, head of the ANU National Security College, viewed it as a signal of China's growing military power projection capabilities. He also predicted that the flotilla would likely visit Pacific island countries.
In response to media inquiries, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that he was not familiar with the situation and referred questions to the competent Chinese authorities.
Meanwhile, Chinese military experts Zhang Junshe and Fu Qianshao emphasized that the presence of the Chinese warships in South Pacific waters was a normal part of a far seas exercise and did not violate any maritime law. They pointed out that the PLA Navy enjoys freedom of navigation and overflight in these waters, just like any other country, and that their presence was far away from Australia's territorial waters.
Fu Qianshao further contrasted the Chinese vessels' presence with the recent intrusion of Australian military aircraft into China's territorial airspace without permission. He urged Australia to reflect on its own actions rather than feeling nervous about the Chinese vessels.
The incident highlights the growing strategic competition between China and Australia in the Indo-Pacific region. While both countries have expressed a desire to improve relations, tensions remain high over issues such as trade, security, and human rights.
