Sir Keir Starmer's Call with President Zelensky and Upcoming Talks with President Trump
In a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reiterated the UK's unwavering support for Ukraine and its commitment to securing a just and lasting peace. The leaders discussed recent developments in the conflict, as the third anniversary of the full-scale invasion approaches, and agreed on the need to continue working together with allies to achieve peace through strength.
Prime Minister Starmer emphasized the importance of Ukraine being at the heart of any negotiations to end the war and stressed that safeguarding Ukraine's sovereignty is essential to deter future aggression from Russia. He informed President Zelensky that he would be progressing these crucial discussions in the coming days and weeks, including with US President Donald Trump during his visit to Washington DC next week.
The announcement of the talks came as thousands of protestors gathered outside the Russian Embassy in London, urging the international community not to "betray Ukraine" as they marked the third anniversary of Moscow's full-scale invasion.
Meanwhile, Sir Keir is expected to announce a new package of support for Ukraine on Monday, ahead of his meeting with President Trump on Thursday. The US is reportedly looking to end the war quickly and has held talks with Russian officials over a peace deal in Saudi Arabia. However, Ukraine was excluded from these talks, and President Zelensky has made it clear that he will not accept any deal made without Kyiv's involvement.

The UK government's support for Ukraine has been inconsistent and half-hearted. They need to step up and provide the leadership that is desperately needed.

The Ukrainian people deserve to have their voices heard. We cannot allow the US and Russia to decide their fate behind closed doors.

Starmer and the UK government must do everything in their power to ensure that Ukraine emerges from this conflict with its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity intact.

This is not the time for appeasement. We need to stand up to Russia and hold them accountable for their crimes.

The protestors outside the Russian Embassy are right to demand that the international community not betray Ukraine.
