Sofia Airport is set to undergo a major transformation with the introduction of Terminal 3, a new facility that will cost £214 million. The project, which is part of a broader strategy to raise the airport's profile, plans to serve up to 20 million passengers each year by doubling the current capacity. By connecting the new terminal with Terminal 2, passengers will benefit from seamless access to all boarding gates within five minutes of the shopping area, in addition to improved security checkpoints capable of processing 3,250 passengers per hour.
The expansive, 65,000-square-metre terminal is a key element of Sofia Airport's ambition to secure a five-star regional rating—a distinction currently held by a select few airports worldwide, with only seven enjoying the status. The airport, which welcomed 7.2 million passengers in 2023, aims to bolster its reputation by providing exceptional customer service and cutting-edge facilities, including kid-friendly play zones and areas designed to accommodate pets. The ambitious plan is supported by an overall investment of £512 million during the airport's concession period.
Construction on this state-of-the-art terminal is scheduled to begin later this year, with an anticipated opening in 2031. The development is expected to not only enhance current travel experiences but also to attract more international routes, particularly as the removal of border controls under the Schengen Agreement makes the airport an increasingly attractive destination for flights from both European and non-European countries. Sofia Airport is already served by carriers like Ryanair and Wizz Air, and with growing discussions to expand its network, the facility looks set to become a key player in the region’s air travel market.

“More international routes sound nice in theory, but what about the local routes that many rely on today?”
