UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held a phone call on Saturday, February 22nd, to discuss the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The two leaders emphasized the need for a "just and enduring peace" in the region and agreed that Europe must play a more active role in ensuring collective security.
Their conversation took place amidst concerns among European leaders that they were being excluded from talks between US President Donald Trump and Russia on the future of Ukraine. The conflict in Ukraine, which began in 2020, marks its third anniversary on Monday, February 24th.
In a statement released by Downing Street, a spokesperson for the Prime Minister said that Starmer and von der Leyen "discussed the need to secure a just and enduring peace in Ukraine, and agreed that Europe must step up for the good of collective European security.
