Europe and the US Gather to Discuss Ukraine Conflict
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the continent's security is at a turning point. Senior figures from across Europe convened in Paris on Monday to discuss responses to the latest developments in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
French President Emmanuel Macron hosted the gathering, which included heads of state from several EU member states, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. This meeting coincided with preparations for a US-Russia meeting in Saudi Arabia to discuss the conflict.
US State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce clarified that the Saudi Arabia talks were not intended for detailed negotiations, but rather to follow up on President Trump's call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Notably, neither Ukrainian nor European representatives were invited to these talks, raising concerns about potential proposals.
The Paris gathering was also prompted by a speech by US Vice-President JD Vance at the Munich Security Conference. Vance declared that decades of the old US-Europe relationship were ending and that Europe needed to adjust to a new reality. This prompted calls for Europe to develop its own plan of action regarding Ukraine, as other global players might not act in Europe's best interests.
Discussions in Paris centered on potential security guarantees from Europe and the US, including the possibility of a post-conflict European military presence in Ukraine. Starmer expressed willingness to commit British troops, emphasizing that such a move would guarantee the security of both Ukraine and Europe. He is scheduled to visit Washington for talks with Trump later this month.
While Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also considered troop commitment, Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk ruled out Polish involvement. Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov dismissed any European involvement in talks, stating that Europe had nothing to contribute. Russia's Ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, accused the EU and UK of being "unfaithful to their word" and blinded by "Russophobia.
