A Three-Way Battle for the Marginal Seat
incumbent Labor MP Christine Tonkin, high-profile Liberal candidate Basil Zempilas, and community independent Lisa Thornton.
Despite the abundance of Zempilas' campaign signs, Tonkin remains confident in her chances of retaining the seat. She believes the more signs Zempilas puts up, the more volunteers she attracts to her campaign. Tonkin is banking on voters being turned off by Zempilas' past attempt to oust Liberal Leader David Honey.
Zempilas, on the other hand, is working tirelessly to meet as many voters as possible. He believes his energy, ideas, and commitment to improving the state's economy and healthcare system will resonate with voters. However, his past comments about transgender people continue to be a point of contention for some.
Thornton, a second-term City of Stirling councillor, is hoping to emulate the success of independent Kate Chaney in the federal seat of Curtin. She is campaigning on integrity in politics, climate and the environment, cost of living, and community-led development.
The other candidates dismiss Thornton's chances, but she remains undeterred. She believes Churchlands voters are open to change and will consider her as a viable alternative.
With the election just around the corner, the race for Churchlands is sure to be a close one. It remains to be seen whether Tonkin can hold onto the seat, Zempilas can overcome his past controversies, or Thornton can pull off an upset victory.

“Can’t we demand more substance? All these signs and controversies do nothing but muddy the real issues.”
