The Underwater Photographer of the Year competition announced its 2025 winners, unveiling a collection of striking underwater images that capture the mysterious and often eerie remains lying beneath the ocean’s surface. Among these, the contest highlighted the wrecks category, which brings attention to relics of the past such as warships, sunken planes, and other submerged vestiges.
The contest received an impressive 6,750 submissions from photographers across 28 countries, showcasing the global appeal of underwater photography. Entries were scrutinized by an expert panel of judges who selected top images across 13 diverse categories.
One standout entry in the wrecks category features a ship that met its fate after colliding with a reef in Egypt in 1985. The series includes a variety of images that not only document the remains of vessels from significant wartime moments, such as those dating back to World War I and World War II, but also capture the lingering mystery of submerged aircraft and other maritime relics.
This year’s event culminated in the selection of the top 10 photos in the wrecks category, each offering a unique glimpse into the underwater landscapes that echo with history and intrigue.
