Hotels in China Report Millions of Minor Check-Ins, Highlight Child Protection Efforts

Hotels in China reported over 42 million check-ins by minors in 2024, according to the Ministry of Public Security. This report comes alongside the ministry's announcement that authorities have handled over 522,000 "suspicious incidents" involving minors to ensure their safety.

The ministry emphasizes the importance of hotels complying with special requirements for accommodating minors, as outlined in the Law on the Protection of Minors introduced in 2021. These regulations require hotels to verify the identities of minors checking in, register their information, and report it to the police. Additionally, hotels must record contact details of the minors' parents or guardians, verify the identities of those sharing rooms with them, enhance patrols and visitor management to prevent rights violations, and alert police and guardians if suspicious circumstances arise.

The ministry highlighted five cases where hotels played a crucial role in protecting minors. In one instance, a hotel in Harbin reported three adults who were unable to provide identification for an accompanying infant. Police investigation revealed the child was being trafficked, leading to the infant's rescue and the case's resolution. Another case involved two boys who had traveled from outside Shanghai and refused to provide their guardians' contact information. The hotel reported the incident, and police discovered the boys had run away from home after a fight with their parents. The officers contacted the parents, who reunited with their children.

These cases underscore the importance of hotels' vigilance in protecting minors and their collaboration with authorities to ensure their safety. The Ministry of Public Security's report highlights the significant role hotels play in safeguarding children and the effectiveness of the regulations implemented to protect them.

Instead of focusing on hotels, we should be investing in programs to help vulnerable children and families.
