Hong Kong experienced a modest population increase in 2024, reaching more than 7.53 million inhabitants, marking the third consecutive year of growth. This rise was largely due to an influx of 21,000 people into the city and a significant boost in the number of newborns, which surged by 11% to reach 36,700.
In efforts to rejuvenate its economy and strengthen its international standing after a prolonged period marked by strict COVID-19 policies that ended in 2023, Hong Kong has implemented various strategies. These measures aimed at attracting talented individuals and importing labor have successfully encouraged many from mainland China and other global regions to relocate to the city.
The demographic uptick comes against a backdrop of previous societal and political challenges, including anti-government protests in 2019 and the subsequent imposition of a national security law by Beijing in 2020. Meanwhile, while Hong Kong sees a population growth, China has witnessed a decline in its population for the third year in a row in 2024.
