Trump Expects Xi Jinping to Visit the United States
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that he anticipates a visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping to the United States, though he did not provide a specific timeframe for the trip.
Trump made the announcement to reporters aboard Air Force One, also expressing his belief that a new trade deal between the U.S. and China is "possible." A potential meeting or interaction between Xi and Trump is viewed as crucial for any potential easing or delay of trade tariffs.
"We'll have, ultimately, President Xi, we will have everybody coming (to the U.S.)," Trump said, also mentioning other world leaders visiting the United States.
Xi's last visit to the U.S. occurred in November 2023, marking his fifth visit to the country as Chinese president. The purpose of the visit was a summit with then-U.S. President Joe Biden, which resulted in agreements to resume military-to-military communications and curb fentanyl production.
Trump and Xi Discussions
Trump and Xi had a conversation just before Trump took office on January 20th, where they discussed various issues including TikTok, trade, and Taiwan.
On Wednesday, Trump informed reporters that he was engaged in discussions with China regarding TikTok, as the United States seeks to broker a sale of the popular app owned by Chinese parent firm ByteDance.
Trump also revealed that he had spoken to Xi since taking office, but did not disclose the specific topics of their conversation. China's foreign ministry did not directly comment on Trump's remarks, instead referring reporters to their "scheduled" call before Trump took office.
Tensions Between the U.S. and China
The relationship between Washington and Beijing has been strained for years due to various disagreements, including trade tariffs, cybersecurity, TikTok, Taiwan, Hong Kong, human rights, and the origins of COVID-19.
Trump on a Potential Deal with Russia
Trump also told reporters that he believes a deal with Russia to end the war in Ukraine is possible.
"We can make a deal with Russia to stop the killing," Trump said, adding that he believes the Russians also desire an end to the war.
"I think they have the cards a little bit because they've taken a lot of territory so they have the cards," Trump said.
