U.S. Navy Relieves Carrier Commander After Collision Incident

The commanding officer of the USS Harry S. Truman was removed from his position after a collision with a merchant vessel in the area where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Suez Canal. U.S. Navy officials stated that Capt. Dave Snowden was relieved due to diminished confidence in his ability to command. He has been reassigned to Naval Air Forces Atlantic, a move viewed as detrimental to his career, while the ship, which had previously participated in operations against ISIS in Somalia, is currently being repaired.

The collision occurred on February 12 as the carrier was returning to the Red Sea near the entrance of the Suez Canal. A senior Navy official explained that inadequate preventive actions by the ship’s captain contributed to the incident. The official emphasized that the ultimate responsibility of ensuring that safety measures are followed fell on the commanding officer, a standard the Navy takes very seriously.

Following the investigation and subsequent removal of Capt. Snowden by Rear Adm. Sean Bailey, the leadership structure on the Truman has changed. Capt. Christopher Hill, who had been commanding the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, was appointed as the interim commanding officer. Meanwhile, photos from the Navy’s Sixth Fleet have documented visible damage on the ship’s starboard side near the stern, and repair efforts are underway at Souda Bay in Greece with expectations that the carrier will soon return to operational status.
