Trump Likens Himself to "King" After Congestion Pricing Program Rescinded
Former President Donald Trump has sparked controversy after comparing himself to a "king" on social media following his administration's decision to rescind New York City's congestion pricing program.
Trump's statement came after his transportation secretary, Sean Duffy, sent a letter to New York Governor Kathy Hochul, ending the transportation department's agreement with the city over the program.
In response to Trump's comments, Hochul issued a statement, emphasizing that the United States is a nation of laws, not ruled by a king. She also highlighted the importance of public transit for New York City and its economic future.
Hochul further stated that the city's Metropolitan Transportation Authority has initiated legal proceedings to preserve the program. She also addressed reporters, stating that New York has not been under a king for over 250 years and will not start now.
Several other politicians also condemned Trump's statement, including New York City council member Justin Brannan and Democratic representative Don Beyer. They emphasized that the United States does not have kings and that the federal government does not have the authority to make this decision.
David Hogg, vice-chair of the Democratic National Committee, also criticized the White House for sharing a computer-generated image of Trump with a crown on a fake Time magazine cover.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker echoed these sentiments, stating that he will not bend the knee to a king and that the United States does not have them.

“Referencing monarchy in this day and age is not only outdated but dangerous. Leadership is about service, not dictating orders like a king.”

“Ridiculous. Rescinding the congestion pricing program shows a lack of regard for public transit and economic well-being of the city.”

“Hats off to Governor Hochul for standing up against Trump’s outrageous claims. The U.S. is clearly a nation of laws.”

“Trump’s claims are delusional. Lawmakers rightly reminded him that the rule of law prevails over anyone’s personal ego.”
