A backcountry skier met a fatal end during an avalanche in the vicinity of Golden, B.C. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported that two men were reported missing late Monday evening and had last been heard from in the early evening hours.
Rescue teams, including a helicopter unit, were dispatched to the scene after a report of the missing skiers. One of the men managed to return home, but despite immediate efforts by rescuers on the hillside to revive his friend, one 42-year-old man from Golden succumbed to his injuries.
According to Avalanche Canada, the duo inadvertently triggered a wind slab avalanche near the upper portion of the slope. The avalanche cascaded down a gully for nearly a kilometre, ultimately positioning the victim over a metre deep in snow near the bottom of the slide.
