Linguistic Minorities Forum of Tamil Nadu Urges Implementation of Three-Language Formula
The Linguistic Minorities Forum of Tamil Nadu (LIMFOT) has written to Chief Minister MK Stalin, urging him to implement the National Educational Policy (NEP 2020) and pave the way for the three-language formula in school education in the state.
LIMFOT Chairman CMK Reddy emphasized the importance of the three-language formula in accommodating minority languages in school education. He clarified that the NEP 2020 does not mandate any specific language, including Hindi or Sanskrit. Instead, it recommends that each state adopt three languages to include the minority language alongside the main state language and English.
Reddy stressed the importance of including mother tongue languages in the curriculum, citing a Supreme Court ruling. He argued that students whose mother tongue is Hindi should have the opportunity to learn it in school.
This development comes amidst ongoing debate regarding the NEP 2020 and its language policy. Chief Minister Stalin has criticized Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's remarks about Tamil Nadu needing to comply with the Indian Constitution regarding the language policy. Stalin questioned which section of the Constitution mandates the three-language policy.
Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan defended the NEP 2020, highlighting its focus on global competitiveness and student participation in academic advancements. He emphasized the policy's encouragement of education in one's mother tongue.
The debate surrounding the NEP 2020 and its language policy is likely to continue, with various stakeholders expressing their concerns and perspectives.
