Education Department Revamps Admissions and Diversity Practices

The education department recently informed schools that they must, within 14 days, discontinue any practices in admissions, scholarships, discipline, and employment that consider race through the use of preferences or stereotypes. This directive emphasizes that students should be evaluated based solely on merit, accomplishments, and character instead of being influenced by preconceived notions tied to race. The move is supported by citing the Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard case, which set a precedent by ruling against racial preferences in school admissions.

In addition to this policy guidance communicated via a “Dear Colleague” letter, the department has been actively working to undo several initiatives put in place by the Biden administration. Actions have included rescinding previous guidance on book bans, terminating roles such as the book ban coordinator, and canceling nearly $1 billion in grants and contracts that supported programs focused on equity assistance, regional educational resources, and training related to critical race theory as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Moreover, the department has shifted its funding priorities by awarding new grants to charter schools and launched multiple investigations. These inquiries target issues such as antisemitism on college campuses, controversies surrounding gender-neutral bathroom policies, and potential Title IX violations. The department is also exerting influence on athletic associations to review and adjust records and recognitions for female athletes in light of concerns over fairness in competition.

“This policy smells of regression. Instead of building a more inclusive future, we’re reverting to outdated ‘colorblind’ ideas.”
