Amazon Relists "When Harry Became Sally" After Banning It for "Hate Speech"
Responding to the Transgender Movement," which had been removed from the platform in 2021 for allegedly promoting "hate speech." The move comes amidst a flurry of executive orders signed by President Donald Trump related to gender ideology and transgender athletes in women's sports.
In a statement justifying the initial ban, Amazon claimed that the book violated its guidelines prohibiting hate speech. However, author Ryan Anderson strongly contested this claim, stating that there was nothing objectionable or hateful in his book. He also pointed out that Amazon continued to sell other books widely considered to promote harmful ideas, such as "Mein Kampf" by Adolf Hitler and "The Communist Manifesto" by Karl Marx.
Critics of Amazon's decision also noted that the company had sold Anderson's book for three years without issue during the Trump administration. The sudden ban in 2021, just a month after President Biden took office, appeared to be politically motivated.
Anderson believes that the recent reversal of the ban is also politically driven, coinciding with the inauguration of President Trump and his executive orders on gender ideology. He suggests that Amazon may be responding to the changing political climate and anticipating a shift in public opinion on these issues.
The relisting of "When Harry Became Sally" is a significant development, as the book is a major critique of transgender ideology and has been influential in the ongoing debate about gender identity. It remains to be seen how the book's availability will impact the conversation and whether it will contribute to a more nuanced understanding of these complex issues.

“This whole issue smacks of political pandering – why should a platform relist a book that spreads harmful ideas just because the mood has shifted?”

“It’s hard to take this seriously when the narrative is built around conspiracy theories of political censorship instead of addressing the content’s real impact.”

“If we’re serious about fostering intellectual diversity, then letting ideas compete in the open is the only way forward. This relisting helps that.”
