In Parkland County, south of Stony Plain along a highway stretch, an incident occurred involving an ambulance and an SUV. The collision took place on Monday when the SUV was crossing the highway and struck an ambulance that had its lights and siren activated as it was transporting three emergency medical personnel. Despite the ambulance appearing to be on an active call, an Alberta Health Services spokesperson clarified via email that it was not actually responding to a call at the time.
The RCMP detailed that after the crash, five individuals required hospitalization. Among those injured, both the driver and a passenger of the SUV were reported in critical but stable condition at the University of Alberta Hospital. The ambulance personnel, on the other hand, were quickly transported to various area hospitals using alternative emergency vehicles. One paramedic sustained only minor injuries, another experienced moderate non-life-threatening harm, and the third remained in stable condition.
The investigation is focusing on the actions of the SUV driver, with particular attention given to whether the driver missed a road sign or was driving at excessive speed, which might have prevented them from stopping at the intersection. RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Troy Savinkoff emphasized that understanding these details is key to determining the cause of the accident.
