Pope Francis Accepts Resignation of Canadian Bishop Amid Sexual Assault Allegations
Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop Jean-Pierre Blais of Baie-Comeau, Canada. The 75-year-old bishop has been named in a class-action lawsuit against the Catholic Church alleging sexual assault.
The Diocese of Baie-Comeau stated that the resignation was not linked to the allegations. However, Blais is mentioned in a list of sexual predators filed as part of the lawsuit. He has denied any wrongdoing.
The diocese also noted that the church's policy requires all bishops who reach the age of 75 to offer their resignation. The pope then decides whether to accept the offer after examining all the circumstances.
In a statement, the pope noted that any bishop who turns 75 is automatically requested to offer his resignation. The pope makes a decision on whether to accept the offer “after he has examined all the circumstances”, the statement said.
Blais has been replaced by Reverend Pierre Charland, 62, currently a leading member of Canada’s Roman Catholic Franciscan order.

Resignation is not enough! This predator should be defrocked and held accountable under the law!

I hope this serves as a reminder that no one is above the law.

This is a step in the right direction, but there is still a lot of work to be done.
