During the recent Chinese New Year holiday, a cutting-edge exoskeleton robot designed to assist hikers began its trial run in the scenic Mount Tai area of Tai'an, Shandong Province. The device was created in collaboration with the Taishan Cultural Tourism Group and a technology firm based in Shenzhen, and it aims to give climbers a more comfortable experience while ascending towards Nantian Gate, one of the peak’s highest points.
Weighing just 1.8 kilograms, the exoskeleton features an ergonomic design that integrates advanced power systems, electronic components, and AI algorithms. The intelligent system processes inputs through an AI processor, enabling the robot's legs to move in harmony with the hiker’s natural gait which significantly boosts leg strength and minimizes the physical strain, cutting energy expenditure by over 30%.
Users have reported that the device helps ease the load on their legs, making the climb feel much lighter—almost as if their legs were being supported throughout the ascent. With a battery life of approximately two and a half to three hours, the technology not only lightens the load by an estimated 10 kilograms but also proves particularly beneficial for older tourists, who can more enjoy outdoor activities with its assistance.
The developers plan to make the exoskeleton available for market launch between late March and early April, and it is expected to be offered for rent within the Mount Tai region. This innovative product promises to make hiking more accessible and less strenuous for a wide range of users, potentially transforming the way both casual visitors and dedicated climbers experience the mountain.

It seems like this robot is taking away the challenge and accomplishment of reaching the top of the mountain on your own.

I'm concerned that this will lead to people becoming more disconnected from nature and less appreciative of its beauty.

What happens to the people who can't afford to rent the robot? Will they be left behind?
