The White House's Office of Personnel Management sent an email to federal workers on Tuesday night, informing them that they must return to the office full-time or resign and receive eight months of pay. According to The Wall Street Journal, employees have until February 6th to make their decision. Those who choose to resign will continue to receive their full salary and benefits, and will be exempt from in-person work requirements until September 30th.
However, the Trump administration has made it clear that even those who remain employed could eventually lose their jobs as the president works to downsize the federal government. The email stated, "At this time, we cannot give you full assurance regarding the certainty of your position or agency, but should your position be eliminated you will be treated with dignity and will be afforded the protections in place for such positions."
The White House is also considering relocating some government offices and downsizing agencies through restructuring, furloughs, and reclassifying employees so they have fewer job protections.
