Thailand Cuts Power to Myanmar Border Region in Crackdown on Call Center Scams

In a bold move to combat cross-border crime, Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has announced the cutting of power supplies to Myanmar's border region. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Phumtham Wechayachai confirmed the power cut, stating that it would take effect at 9 am local time on Wednesday, February 5th, 2025. The decision was made following a meeting with the Thai National Security Council, where the Prime Minister instructed the Council to oversee the measures.

The power cut will affect five regions in Myanmar, including the Myawaddy area, which has been identified as a hub for call center scams. The Thai government's action is based on a 1996 resolution allowing the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) of Thailand to sell electricity to neighboring villages.

This move by Thailand signifies a strong stance against transnational crime and highlights the growing concern over online scams originating from neighboring countries.
