In the early hours of Wednesday, the PLA Eastern Theater Command announced that it had closely monitored a US naval operation in the Taiwan Straits. Unlike earlier transits which occurred within a single day, this operation involved a US destroyer and an oceanographic survey ship that traveled from Monday to Wednesday, extending the period of observation.
Senior military officials confirmed that both naval and air assets were mobilized to track the US vessels throughout their passage. They stressed that the operation not only sent misleading signals but also heightened regional security risks. Chinese state representatives reiterated that the Taiwan issue lies at the core of national interests, emphasizing a strong opposition to any foreign interference and a commitment to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Military analysts noted that the inclusion of an oceanographic survey ship—an element not seen in previous transits—allowed the US to collect detailed maritime data such as seabed formations, hydrological and meteorological information, and even to conduct underwater surveillance using towed sonar equipment. This operational twist extended the duration of the transit and underscored the expertise behind the mission, prompting the PLA to respond quickly to counter any misleading narratives.
Further reinforcing its position, Chinese officials from the Taiwan Affairs Office and the Foreign Ministry reminded audiences that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China’s territory. They urged the US to carefully adhere to the one-China principle and the established protocols in US-China communications, cautioning that provocative actions would continue to be met with a proactive and vigilant response by the PLA, even during periods traditionally associated with festive celebrations.
