In a strong statement on social media, President Jose Raul Mulino declared that Panama and its people do not accept the remarks made by President Donald Trump regarding the Panama Canal during his inaugural address. Mulino made it clear that the Canal has always been, and will always remain, the sovereign property of Panama, and its management adheres to the principles of permanent neutrality as guaranteed by international agreements.
The President also highlighted Panama's uninterrupted, responsible administration of the Canal over the past 25 years, underscoring that its operations have consistently supported global trade, including that of the United States. He emphasized that no other country has the authority to interfere in Panama’s control and reiterated that legal protections and international law, as established by the Torrijos-Carter Treaty, are the foundation of Panama’s resolute stance.
Mulino concluded by stressing that dialogue remains the preferred method for clarifying any issues, provided it does not compromise Panama's unyielding right to govern its own strategic asset independently.
