Kalob Wayne Byers, a 28-year-old US citizen, was detained at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport after customs officials were alerted by a sniffer dog to the presence of cannabis-containing products in his luggage. Due to Russian laws that prohibit cannabinoids, Byers was held, though his recent release has been attributed to a warming of relations between Washington and Moscow, as highlighted by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
Peskov commented that by releasing Byers quickly, both countries aim to rebuild their comprehensive diplomatic relationship, with further discussions scheduled in Saudi Arabia between senior officials that could advance negotiations on broader issues, including the ongoing conflicts tied to Ukraine. This move comes in the wake of a recent prisoner exchange involving an American schoolteacher and former diplomat, Marc Fogel, and a Russian crypto businessman, Aleksandr Vinnik, suggesting that both sides may be willing to make concessions to improve overall relations.
Byers, who hails from West Virginia, traveled through Türkiye to Russia with the intention of finalizing his marriage to his Russian fiancée. His family explained that the cannabis gummies and marmalade he carried were for managing his epilepsy—a condition for which Russia does not grant medical marijuana exceptions. During a statement, his mother emphasized that her son is a responsible individual preparing to start a new chapter in his life and expressed her thanks to the supportive network of friends, representatives, and media that aided in securing his release.

Privileged foreigner gets away with breaking the law while citizens face harsh sentences for the same. Is this justice?

Unacceptable! Letting someone break our laws for a personal condition sets a terrible precedent.

Maybe this event will open eyes to the need for reevaluating cannabis laws worldwide.

He chose to smuggle drugs into our country. Now he should face the legal consequences, even if it takes years.

Cannabis is illegal here, epilepsy or not! This sends the wrong message to our youth.

This incident makes a mockery of our legal system. Anyone can now claim epilepsy to get away with anything?
