US Fighter Jet Crashes in San Diego Bay, Energy Poverty Worsens in EU

February 12-15, 2024

A US military fighter jet crashed into the water of San Diego Bay, California, on February 12. Both pilots ejected shortly before impact and are currently hospitalized after being rescued.

A driver narrowly escaped getting run over by a train moments before it hit an SUV that was pushed onto the tracks in Layton, Utah, on February 4. Video footage of the incident was released one week later.

As utility bills soar and real wages fall, energy poverty in the EU is worsening. Over 10% of the population couldn't heat their homes in 2023—6 million more than in 2022. Among the worst affected aren't the coldest countries but Spain, Portugal, Bulgaria, and Greece.

Elon Musk's bring your kid to work day took an unexpected turn when four-year-old X Æ A-Xii made his presence known in the Oval Office — stealing the spotlight from President Donald Trump and even bluntly telling him to “shush your mouth.”

US President Donald Trump referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a ‘Governor’ during his address at the White House on February 13.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has claimed that a Russian explosive-laden drone struck the protective structure covering the destroyed Reactor No 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant on February 14.

Despite the ceasefire deal requiring 200,000 tents and 60,000 temporary homes for Gaza, Israel has only allowed 20,000 tents in — blocking shelter, heavy machinery, and the recovery of bodies buried under rubble.

2024 was the deadliest year for journalists in over three decades, while in the last 15 months, 205 were killed in Gaza. Israel was responsible for the vast majority of journalists killed worldwide during its war in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria.

In exchange for three Israeli hostages, Israel is set to release 369 Palestinians as part of the sixth round of prisoner exchanges between Hamas and Israel since the ceasefire took effect on January 19.

Israel's Prison Service has released Palestinian prisoners as part of the sixth phase of the Israel-Hamas agreement on February 15. The prisoners were forced to wear shirts emblazoned with the slogan “Never forgive, never forget,” further stigmatising them.

In contrast, Hamas has condemned Israel's treatment of prisoners, highlighting its own approach of respect and dignity. When releasing hostages, Hamas has been seen giving gifts as a gesture of goodwill, presenting a stark contrast to Israel's actions.

Another near miss with a train! This is getting ridiculous. We need better safety measures in place.

It's important to investigate the attack on Chernobyl and hold those responsible accountable.
