China's highest procuratorate is taking decisive action against crimes that compromise food and drug safety. A senior prosecutor detailed new measures aimed at curbing illegal activities, emphasizing that online platforms and livestreaming sales will be closely monitored and regulated.
The effort, which has seen nearly 13,000 suspects indicted in the first 11 months of 2024, targets both drug-related offenses and violations of food safety standards. In particular, the initiative has led to over 5,700 drug-related indictments and more than 7,200 charges linked to harmful food products.
March 2024 saw the launch of a special campaign to eliminate the production and sale of counterfeit or subpar products, with a specific focus on offenses that leverage digital marketing channels. This campaign forms part of a broader strategy to protect public health and safety by addressing the growing concerns related to food and drug safety violations.
In addition, the procuratorate has initiated a public interest litigation operation, which will intensify scrutiny in key areas such as illegal food additives, agricultural products, and medical devices. This oversight will continue until October, illustrating the authorities' commitment to safeguarding public interest and ensuring compliance with food and drug safety regulations.

This crackdown is a necessary evil, and I believe that the long-term benefits will outweigh the short-term costs.

I'm confident that the government will be able to effectively enforce these new measures, and I hope that this will lead to a significant improvement in food and drug safety in China.

This is nothing new. China has been saying they'll crack down on food and drug safety for years, but nothing ever changes.

I'm worried that this crackdown will lead to increased censorship and restrictions on online speech.

This is just another example of the Chinese government overstepping its bounds and trying to control every aspect of our lives.

I'm not confident that the government will be able to effectively enforce these new measures, especially given the widespread corruption in China.
