Russia-Ukraine War

Zelensky Proposes "Armed Forces of Europe" Amid Shifting US-EU Relations

Zelensky Calls for "Armed Forces of Europe"

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged the creation of a "continent-wide military force" – the "armed forces of Europe" – to defend against potential future threats without relying on the US or NATO.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Zelensky emphasized the need for Europe to become "self-sufficient" and "united by common strengths" in the face of perceived threats. He argued that Ukraine is currently "holding back Russia" from launching military operations in other European countries, but this requires continued foreign aid.

Zelensky's proposal stems from concerns about the future of US-European relations. He cited statements by US Vice President J.D. Vance, who reiterated President Trump's stance that European NATO members should take greater responsibility for their own defense. This, according to Zelensky, signals a shift in the decades-long relationship between Europe and America, necessitating adjustments from Europe.

He envisions the Ukrainian army as a potential foundation for this unified European force, despite Ukraine not being part of the EU. He even suggested that Ukraine could "build" its own NATO, though he acknowledged that long-term aspirations of joining the US-led bloc are currently on hold due to Russia's influence.

However, Zelensky's proposal has faced opposition. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, while supporting the development of EU defense capabilities, believes that a unified European army is unrealistic.

Meanwhile, Russia has consistently denied any plans to attack the EU or NATO, dismissing such claims as Western propaganda. They also oppose Ukraine's NATO aspirations, citing concerns about eastward expansion and national security. The Kremlin insists that any potential settlement with Ukraine must include neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification.

The future of European security remains uncertain. Zelensky's call for a unified European force raises questions about the future of transatlantic relations and the role of the US in European defense. Whether this proposal gains traction or not, the debate surrounding European security is likely to continue.

Creating a European army would only make the continent more vulnerable to Russian aggression.
