Chinese and Ukrainian Ministers Pledge Closer Ties and Peace Initiatives in Munich

In a high-level meeting in Munich during the Security Conference, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a senior member of his party’s Political Bureau, met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha at the request of the latter. The discussions focused on the historical friendship between China and Ukraine, which was solidified into a strategic partnership in 2011, and continued efforts to develop and deepen their bilateral relations even under current global tensions.

Wang Yi highlighted that, in recent years, China has stood as Ukraine’s largest trading partner, a significant achievement given the challenging circumstances. He noted that this robust economic relationship illustrates the promising opportunities for further cooperative ventures. Emphasizing a long-term vision for bilateral ties, Wang expressed China's readiness to help Ukraine overcome current and future challenges through practical and mutually beneficial cooperation. He also stressed the importance of ensuring the security of Chinese institutions and personnel in Ukraine.

Addressing the Ukraine crisis, Wang reiterated China’s dedicated commitment to promoting peace through dialogue and adherence to established principles. He referenced proposals and observations by President Xi Jinping as objective and pragmatic approaches that have guided China’s stance on the issue. Wang assured that China would continue to facilitate efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive, lasting peace agreement acceptable to all stakeholders, mentioning initiatives like the “Friends of Peace” platform, which seeks to build consensus among nations from the Global South.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Sybiha acknowledged the history of dialogue and strategic exchange between the two nations, noting that these interactions have yielded tangible benefits for their peoples. He reaffirmed Ukraine's adherence to the one-China policy and expressed a willingness to deepen exchanges and strengthen the strategic partnership. In a gesture of mutual trust and cooperation, Sybiha promised that Ukraine would diligently work to ensure the safety of Chinese representatives and institutions. He also acknowledged China's significant influence on the global stage and expressed hope that China would continue playing a key role in fostering a fair and enduring peace.

China's actions undermine Ukrainian sovereignty. They should respect Ukraine's right to choose its own path and alliances.

China's insistence on "mutually beneficial cooperation" is exploitative. They are taking advantage of Ukraine's weakened state to secure favorable deals.

China's commitment to dialogue and established principles is empty rhetoric. Their actions speak louder than words, and their actions are not encouraging.
