USAID Headquarters Closed Following DOGE Intervention
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) headquarters in Washington, D.C. was closed to agency personnel on Monday, February 3, 2025, following moves by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to exert control over the foreign-aid organization.
An email sent to USAID personnel stated that the closure was ordered by "Agency leadership." The email instructed employees to work remotely, except for those with essential functions who were directly contacted by senior leaders. Further instructions were promised in a later communication.
The email also directed replies to an email address associated with Gavin Kliger, a special advisor to the director of the Office of Personnel Management who works for DOGE, according to his LinkedIn profile.
This development has raised concerns about DOGE's future actions towards other agencies. The Wall Street Journal reported that the attack on USAID, an independent organization established by law, at the behest of the world's richest man, raises questions about whether DOGE will follow a similar blueprint to close other agencies.
