Singapore's Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam announced plans to impose tougher penalties on those caught speeding beginning next year. Until the end of the current year, offenders will continue to be fined at existing rates, but they will receive notifications informing them of the upcoming changes.
In a speech delivered as part of the Traffic Police Road Safety Day in Chong Pang, Mr Shanmugam emphasized that the increased fines and demerit point penalties are intended to influence driver behavior. By providing several months for the public to adjust, the authorities hope to mitigate dangerous driving habits that have proven detrimental, given that vehicles can become hazards on the road.
The minister underscored the pressing need for change by citing the continuous occurrence of injuries and fatalities on the roads despite ongoing enforcement efforts. He expressed a collective determination to reshape driver conduct and enhance road safety, with further details about the revised penalties to be released by the Traffic Police in the near future.

This won't change anything. People will still speed, they'll just be more careful about getting caught.
