PAP has more potential candidates than spaces, says Shanmugam

Singapore's Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam stated on Saturday (Feb 15) that the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) consistently has more potential candidates for each general election than available spaces to field them.

Shanmugam made this remark during a media interaction on the sidelines of a walkabout in Khatib, within Nee Soon GRC, where he serves as the anchor minister.

During the walkabout, Shanmugam engaged with residents at the local market alongside other members of the Nee Soon team, including Minister of State for Home Affairs Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Mr Louis Ng, Ms Carrie Tan, and Mr Derrick Goh.

They were joined by Mr Daniel Liu, the Citizens' Consultative Committee chairman of Nee Soon East, who will take over the leadership of PAP's Paya Lebar branch in opposition-held Aljunied GRC on Monday.

Shanmugam highlighted Mr Liu's contributions to Nee Soon over the past decade, identifying him as one of the political talents he had recognized.

"He's one of those that I identified, and then I sent him to Louis," said the minister, referring to Mr Ng, the current Member of Parliament for the Nee Soon East ward.

"He could easily have stood earlier, but we always have more potential candidates than spaces," Shanmugam added.

He explained that the 2015 elections were "too early" for Mr Liu to be considered for candidacy, and that he "might have been considered" for the 2020 contest.

"It doesn't mean he is confirmed for 2025. The process is still ongoing," Shanmugam clarified.

He concluded by stating that the final decision on Mr Liu's deployment will be made by the party's central executive committee.

We need a change in leadership. The PAP's arrogance and sense of entitlement are holding Singapore back. It's time for a new generation of leaders who are truly committed to serving the people.
