European leaders gathered in Munich on Saturday, February 16th, to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine. The meeting came after US President Donald Trump announced his intention to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss an end to the conflict.
Trump's announcement left European allies concerned that their interests would be sidelined in any negotiations. In response, European leaders called for a more active role in the peace process.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that Europe needed to come up with "good proposals" for securing peace in Ukraine if it wanted to be involved in US-led talks.
"If Europeans want to have a say, make yourself relevant," Rutte told journalists.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also spoke at the Munich meeting. He said that the United States was committed to finding an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
"President Trump has made it clear that he wants to see an end to the violence in Ukraine," Rubio said. "We are working with our partners to achieve that goal."
The Munich meeting was the latest in a series of diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine. The conflict has killed thousands of people and displaced millions more.
