You're enjoying a plate of fresh chee cheong fun at a hawker centre when chaos erupts. Masked gunmen invade the peaceful lunch spot, sending patrons fleeing in terror.
Amidst the pandemonium, you notice a man slumped against a pillar, blood pouring from his arm. An older man, the familiar face of your chee cheong fun vendor, crouches beside him, expertly applying a tourniquet to stem the flow of blood.
This is no ordinary hawker uncle. He is Kevin Yong, one of over 80 participants in Exercise Heartbeat, a counterterrorism and emergency preparedness drill held at Marsiling Mall Hawker Centre. For the first time, the Home Team's simulation involved an attack at a hawker centre, perpetrated by self-radicalised individuals.
"I'm always prepared," says Mr. Yong, 62, a former member of a community emergency response group. His quick thinking and decisive action demonstrate the importance of preparedness in the face of unexpected threats.
