A federal judge in Manhattan has once again extended a temporary block on Elon Musk’s cost-cutting team, DOGE, barring it from entering the U.S. Treasury’s payment systems. This injunction, originally imposed last Saturday, comes as part of legal measures initiated by Democratic state officials and unions who are scrutinizing the team’s authority to handle systems that process trillions of dollars in payments.
The Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency, created as a part of President Trump’s sweeping efforts to eliminate waste and reduce government spending, has rapidly moved through federal agencies since its inception. Appointed to root out what they deem as wasteful practices, Musk and his team have faced significant opposition, with at least 20 related cases and roughly 70 lawsuits targeting various Trump initiatives.
At a recent court hearing, Judge Jeannette Vargas indicated she had delayed ruling on a request by 19 Democratic state attorneys general to secure a more lasting injunction against DOGE’s access. The attorneys general contend that the team’s actions could expose sensitive personal information belonging to millions of Americans and potentially disrupt funding for vital services such as health clinics and preschools.
Other courts have similarly seen challenges arise. In Manhattan, Judge Randolph Moss considered a student association’s plea to restrict DOGE from reaching systems at the Department of Education, citing concerns over privacy and procedural norms. Meanwhile, in Washington, Judge John Bates heard arguments from unions worried about the potential exposure of records from multiple federal departments, describing aspects of the government’s stance as “odd.”
A coalition of Democratic attorneys general has also taken legal action against Musk, Trump, and the DOGE team, arguing that Musk’s appointment – and subsequent actions – overstep constitutional bounds. Although judicial opinions have yet to fully determine the fate of these initiatives, the controversy underscores the intense legal battles sparked by the Trump administration’s agenda of reshaping government functions.

“This is nothing but a politically motivated witch-hunt against innovation. Why should Musk be punished for looking for efficiency?”
