Zelensky on the Need for US Support
In a recent interview with NBC News, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his concerns about the country's ability to survive Russia's ongoing assault without the unwavering support of the United States. He acknowledged the immense difficulty Ukraine faces and the low chance of survival without US assistance.
Zelensky's comments come after a series of phone calls between US President Donald Trump, Zelensky, and Russian President Vladimir Putin. These calls marked Trump's first significant diplomatic efforts towards resolving the conflict, which he had previously promised to end swiftly.
During the calls, Trump reportedly expressed doubts about Ukraine's potential membership in NATO and the likelihood of regaining all its lost territory. Russia, which annexed Crimea in 2014, launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Russia's withdrawal from captured territories and the provision of NATO membership or equivalent security guarantees to prevent future attacks. Zelensky believes that Putin's desire for a ceasefire is merely a tactic to buy time for regrouping and lifting sanctions, not a genuine attempt to end the war.
While Trump described his conversations with both Putin and Zelensky as positive, the future of Ukraine remains uncertain. The country's survival hinges on continued US support, and the path towards a lasting peace remains unclear.
