A 17-year-old student at Forest High School in Marion County, Florida, was caught with a firearm in December. During the investigation, authorities discovered disturbing text messages between the student and his 35-year-old language arts and reading teacher, Lindsey Rickman.
The messages revealed that Rickman had been sending romantic messages to the student, including saying "I love you" and calling him "cute." She also asked if he had a girlfriend, to which he replied, "Na only u lolz."
Investigators believe that Rickman may have been grooming the student and gaining his trust as an authority figure. They also believe that she was trying to desensitize him to the physical touch she desired.
The student denied having any sexual contact with Rickman but said he could have if he wanted to. He described her to police as a "cool friend."
Rickman was Rickman's 8th-grade teacher and previously taught at Fort King Middle School from 2019 until she moved to Forest High School in 2024.
Police believe that their "romantic relationship" began in June 2023.
Rickman was arrested and charged with being an authority figure engaged in a romantic relationship with a student in violation of state law. She was released on bond and is due in court on March 18.
The Marion County Public School district has placed Rickman on paid administrative leave while the police and internal investigations continue. The district spokesperson noted that Rickman has "no reprimands or letters of discipline in her employee file other than leaving early one day.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. I bet there are many more cases like this that go unreported.

This is a very sad situation, but we need to remember that we don't know all the details yet. Let's wait for the investigation to be completed before jumping to conclusions.

We need to be careful not to victim-blame the student in this situation. He may have been manipulated, but he is still a victim.
