Recent statistics reveal that China's marriage registrations have plunged by a record 20% in the past year, a drop from 7.68 million in 2021 to just over 6.1 million. This drastic decrease underscores a new trend where young Chinese increasingly shun the conventional path of marriage and family life, driven by the high costs associated with raising children and the escalating expenses for education.
In addition to the financial burden, recent economic stagnation has left many young graduates facing unpredictable job prospects and prolonged periods of instability, adding to their reluctance to settle down. Experts have noted that even during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the recorded decline in marriages was significantly lower at 12.2%, making the current figures even more alarming.
Demographers point out that the number of marriages recorded last year is less than half of what was seen in 2013, raising serious concerns about the future demographic makeup of the country. With China’s population ageing rapidly and nearly 300 million citizens expected to retire in the upcoming decade, the ongoing trend could have profound implications for the nation’s political and economic landscape.
In response to these issues, Chinese authorities have introduced several measures aimed at reversing the trend, including initiatives in higher education to promote a positive view of marriage and family formation. Local governments have also been directed to invest in addressing the population crisis by emphasizing the benefits of childbearing and encouraging marriage at an appropriate age.
Even though there was a temporary uptick in births – partly attributed to cultural beliefs surrounding the Chinese zodiac year of the dragon – overall population numbers have continued to decline for the third year in a row. Alongside the drop in marriages, there has been a slight increase in divorces, which further highlights the evolving challenges within the fabric of Chinese society.

“Is this an attempt to force government measures on personal life decisions? People shouldn’t be pressured into marriage.”

“It’s disheartening to see a one-sided picture; young people are making informed decisions rather than simply fearing economic instability.”
