Thousands of drivers from Uber, Bolt, and Addison Lee will go on strike on Valentine's Day for six hours, starting at 4 pm. The Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) is backing the strike, saying it's in response to long hours, high car rents, and poor job security.
One driver, Helio Santos, says he feels like a slave to the app, working 60-70 hours a week with no certainty of income. He says Uber ignores running costs, leaving him with little after paying rent and electricity.
The IWGB says drivers are united in demanding better pay and job security. They believe the strike will show the power of drivers and force the companies to change.
Uber, Bolt, and Addison Lee have all responded, saying they value their drivers and are committed to fair pay and conditions. However, GMB, Uber's officially recognized trade union, is not participating in the strike.

This strike isn't just about Uber drivers, it's about the entire gig economy. We need to fight for better conditions for all gig workers.

We need to show these companies that consumers care about the drivers. Boycotting their services on Valentine's Day sends a strong message.

Why should Uber et al. pay them more and give them more job security? Isn't that the risk involved in being an independent contractor?

GMB failing to participate in this strike is a disgrace. They're supposed to be representing the drivers, yet they're siding with the companies.

Don't these drivers realize this is a flexible job opportunity? If they don't like the terms, they can find something else.

This kind of strike just harms the businesses involved. These drivers should work with the companies, not against them.

This will just inconvenience people on Valentine's Day. Do they really have to choose such a romantic evening?
