Labour's Performance Disappoints Businesses, Says Alastair Campbell
Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair's former spin doctor, has delivered a scathing assessment of Labour's performance in the eyes of the business community. Speaking to the Labour Movement for Europe, Campbell revealed that at a recent event with 300 business leaders, the overwhelming majority felt Labour was performing worse than expected.
Campbell attributed this negative perception to several factors, including the recent national insurance hike on employers, the inheritance tax raid on farmers, and other reforms. He also highlighted the disappointment surrounding Labour's much-vaunted "reset" with Europe.
In his speech, Campbell urged Labour to stop debating Brexit on its opponents' terms and instead focus on exposing the true cost of the Brexit deal. He cited figures from The Independent, including the £30 billion divorce settlement, the 15% long-term hit on trade, and the significant drop in exports and seafood exports.
Campbell also criticized Labour's approach to Nigel Farage, urging the party to treat him like a politician and expose his arguments and record. He emphasized the need to memorize and utilize the facts surrounding Brexit to effectively counter the Brexiteers' narrative.
Labour needs to win back the trust of the business community and stop being defensive about the negative impacts of Brexit. By focusing on facts and exposing the true cost of the deal, Labour can regain its credibility and position itself for future success.

“The narrative of ‘reset’ with Europe is more complex than a headline suggests. Labour’s approach isn’t as disastrous as claimed.”

“Using figures out of context to discredit Labour only deepens the partisan divide, rather than fostering real debate.”

“It feels like this piece is more about scoring political points rather than engaging in constructive policy discussion.”

“Labour’s decisions aren’t solely about pleasing businesses—they’re about creating a fairer society. This article misses that nuance.”

“Campbell’s outdated spin doesn’t reflect today’s multifaceted challenges. A simplistic critique never helps.”
