A Palm Beach County deputy was fatally shot by a man who was upset that the officer was dating his ex-girlfriend.
Kevin Bennette, 32, was arrested Thursday in connection with the death of Deputy Basil Powell. Powell was shot and killed while returning home in Belle Glade, Florida on Monday evening.
Police say Bennette was "extremely agitated" and "upset" that Powell was dating his ex-partner. Bennette is expected to face a first-degree murder charge.
Powell had been dating Bennette's former partner for three years. Bennette was arrested with Powell's handcuffs.
Investigators have DNA and other forensic evidence tying Bennette to the scene, but the murder weapon has not been found.
Bennette has been convicted of prior crimes, including domestic battery, burglary, and theft.
Community members have shared their condolences on social media.
The Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office have both offered their condolences to Powell's family and colleagues.

Bennette deserves the harshest punishment possible. His actions have destroyed the life of a good man and devastated his family.

This is absolutely insane! What kind of monster kills someone just because they're dating their ex-partner?

I can't even imagine the pain Powell's family is going through right now. They've lost a son, a brother, a friend, and their lives will never be the same. My deepest sympathies go out to them.

This is a reminder that domestic violence is a serious issue, and we need to do more to protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable.

This makes me so angry. Powell was just a man trying to live his life, and he was cruelly taken from his loved ones. Bennette needs to face the full consequences of his actions.
