Melbourne Victory midfielder Alana Murphy has received a surprise call-up to the Matildas squad for this month's SheBelieves Cup. The 19-year-old replaces injured midfielder Clare Wheeler.
Murphy has been in impressive form for Melbourne Victory this season, establishing herself as one of the top defensive midfielders in the A-League Women competition. She has scored one goal and provided one assist in 15 games.
Murphy joins Brisbane Roar's Laini Freier as the only uncapped players in the squad. The team will assemble after this weekend's games.
Wheeler's thigh injury is a setback for the Everton midfielder, who has struggled to establish herself at the national team level. The 27-year-old also missed last year's friendlies against Brazil and Chinese Taipei due to injury.
Australia will open their SheBelieves Cup campaign against Japan on February 21 (AEDT), before facing the USA and Colombia.

Murphy hasn't proven anything yet. Wheeler's call-up would have been much more sensible.

With Murphy, Carpenter, and Cooney, the future of the Matildas midfield is in good hands.

Wheeler's injury is a real shame. She would have been a much better choice for the Matildas.

Is anyone else worried about the lack of experience in this squad?
