NRL Expansion Talks to Resume After Election
The NRL will resume expansion talks with the Western Australian government after next month's state election. League boss Andrew Abdo remains confident the competition can expand to 20 teams.
The Western Bears bid has been in limbo since the NRL rejected the initial proposal. Talks with the WA government to salvage the Perth project have been ongoing, with a $120 million backing to join the NRL.
Further discussions will wait until after the March 8 election. "We will re-engage with the government and hopefully put a business case to the Commission," said Abdo.
The NRL had aimed for a 20-team competition with three new sides by 2032, but progress has been slow. A move to 20 teams could allow for changes to season length and structure.
Abdo remains optimistic, citing the game's growth and the success of the Dolphins expansion and the women's game.
A Mana Pasifika bid, representing Pacific Island nations, also hopes to become the 20th team. "We are the biggest sport in the Pacific," said Abdo. "We would be crazy not to look at another team in New Zealand or the Pacific.
