Young Gun Konstas Scores Century in Queensland Victory
Sam Konstas, the young gun of Australian cricket, overcame leg cramps to score his first domestic one-day century, leading Queensland to victory over New South Wales in a high-scoring encounter.
Despite Konstas' impressive 116, NSW were dismissed for 256 while chasing Queensland's imposing total of 9-310 at Allan Border Field on Thursday.
The 19-year-old opener, who made his Test debut on Boxing Day, reminded everyone of his immense potential as he anchored the NSW innings in his second domestic one-day match.
While Konstas remained at the crease, NSW held onto a glimmer of hope for victory. However, a mid-innings collapse proved costly for the visitors.
Earlier, Lachie Hearne had set up the sizeable Queensland total with a century of his own. After a rain-delayed start and a shortened match of 45 overs per side, Hearne and Max Bryant steadied the innings with a 100-run stand.
Jack Wildermuth then joined Hearne in a 120-run partnership as batting conditions became more favorable. Wildermuth smashed 83 runs from just 56 balls, while Hearne unleashed four consecutive sixes to take Moises Henriques out of the attack.
Hearne eventually departed for 107 off 91 balls, with Gurinder Sandhu scoring a valuable 21 not out to push the score past 300. Jack Nisbet was the pick of the NSW bowlers, taking 4-49 from his nine overs.
NSW made a solid start to their chase, reaching 1-113 in the 18th over. However, they then lost three crucial wickets in quick succession, leaving them reeling at 4-118.
A 50-run stand between Konstas and Hayden Kerr raised NSW's hopes, but the dismissal of Kerr for 14 triggered another collapse. Sandhu claimed Konstas's wicket in the 40th over, confirming Queensland's victory.
Liam Guthrie took 3-45 for Queensland, while Callum Vidler claimed 2-66. Despite falling short of the target, NSW managed to avoid conceding the bonus point by reaching 256 before their last wicket fell in the 42nd over.
