Trump's Border Czar Meets with NYC Mayor to Discuss Crackdown on Criminal Aliens
President Donald Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, met with New York City Mayor Eric Adams to discuss collaboration between federal authorities and the NYPD in cracking down on known criminal aliens in the city, particularly members of Venezuela's Tren de Aragua gang.
This meeting comes shortly after federal authorities dropped a corruption case against Adams, which he had alleged was politically motivated retaliation for his opposition to open border policies. Adams has denied any wrongdoing and met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago last month.
Homan hopes to reach an agreement with the mayor where the NYPD assists in removing known threats to public safety. Another potential area of agreement is reopening an office for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the city's main jail on Rikers Island.
However, Homan is reportedly unhappy with the progress on these matters and wants to see immediate changes. He believes the mayor should utilize his emergency order power and cooperate with Trump's administration.
Adams has previously stated that the city would work with ICE as part of Trump's nationwide crackdown on criminal aliens, despite sanctuary laws in place. He has also been critical of his own party on immigration, stating that Trump's election was a vote to fix a "broken" system.
A state sanctuary law in New York resulted in a $60 million judgment against the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office for holding illegal aliens on ICE detainers. Trump's new Attorney General, Pam Bondi, has announced lawsuits against New York and other states for allegedly using sanctuary laws to shield illegal immigrants from federal immigration enforcement.
ICE claims that its crackdown in the Big Apple is already making the streets safer after a joint operation nabbed multiple gang members, drug traffickers, and other "dangerous criminals.
